Women United’s® first initiative is called the Learning for Life Reading Mentor Program. The goal is to ensure that all children in our area are reading at the proficient level by the end of third grade. Up through third grade children are learning to read; after third grade they are reading to learn. Our schools are doing a great job but they cannot do it alone.
As a community we need to wrap our arms around these children and offer them the guidance, support and mentoring that they need. This is a pivotal time in the life of a child and could determine the level of success they experience later in life.
We currently have Learning for Life mentors volunteering with kindergarten through third grade students at Humke Elementary School in Nekoosa; Port Edwards Elementary School; Grove Elementary, Mead Elementary Charter and Washington Elementary Schools in Wisconsin Rapids. The lives of these students are being impacted each time their mentor enters their classroom.
MORE INFORMATION WILL BE AVAILABLE IN AUGUST.
